Maggie Smith, the legendary British actress, has passed away at the age of 89. Renowned for her roles as Professor McGonagall in “Harry Potter” and Violet Crawley in “Downton Abbey,” she left an indelible mark on both cinema and theatre. Born on december 28, 1934, in Ilford, she began her career on stage in the 1950s before achieving cinematic success in the 1960s. She won two Oscars: Best Actress for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1970) and Best Supporting Actress for “California Suite” (1979).

Personal life, complicated

Despite a tumultuous personal life, including a challenging marriage to actor Robert Stephens, Maggie Smith continued to excel in her career. She overcame breast cancer in 2007 and continued working despite her illness. She was honored by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 and again in 2014 for her contributions to the arts.
