Boxing Day : Arsenal stays in the title race

Arsenal secured a vital 1-0 home win against Ipswich Town, keeping their title hopes alive as they chase Liverpool. This victory was essential for the Gunners, who were fourth in the Premier League, nine points behind Liverpool before the match. The title race remains uncertain, especially given Arsenal’s past struggles during this period of the season.

Dominating the early stages

Despite a convincing 5-1 win over Crystal Palace on December 21, Bukayo Saka’s injury was a concern for Mikel Arteta. Facing Ipswich, who had lost 4-0 to Newcastle the previous weekend, Arsenal needed a win. Ipswich, better on the road than at home, hadn’t won at Arsenal since 1979, and that streak continued tonight.

Kai Havertz breaks the deadlock

Arsenal dominated possession early on, holding the ball for 91% of the first 20 minutes. The Gunners took the lead through Kai Havertz, who finished off a fine pass from Leandro Trossard, playing in place of Bukayo Saka (23rd minute, 1-0). Gabriel Jesus had a chance to double the lead in the 35th minute, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Controlled second half

In the second half, Arsenal continued to press for a second goal. Gabriel Jesus came close from a corner, but his effort just missed the right post (63rd minute). Martin Odegaard also had a notable individual effort, but his shot to the top right corner was saved by Arijanet Muric (74th minute). The score remained 1-0 until the final whistle.

Arsenal climbs the podium

This win moves Mikel Arteta’s men up to second place in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Liverpool. Meanwhile, Ipswich Town continues to struggle, sitting 19th with 12 points. The Tractor Boys will need to secure points in their upcoming matches against Chelsea and Fulham to avoid further slipping into the relegation zone.
